History of the School of Journalism
& Communication
University of Oregon

Memory is the museum of the mind. What you will find here is a record of the tradition and history of the School of Journalism and Communication at the University of Oregon. It is a record worth preserving. The history of the school is made up of towering individuals and regular folks, of successes and setbacks, of good times and trying times, and always of change. We celebrate that heritage on these pages, and dedicate this history to those who have gone before.
McClure Hall, the first home of the School
The first building designated as the School of Journalism, built in 1923
The first building designated as Allen Hall, built in 1954
The new Allen Hall, finished in 2013
The history of the School is nowhere better illustrated than in its changing face. The photos above represent that change through the physical structure of the SOJC from its inception in 1916 through today. Click on any image to enlarge.
